Optical microcavities have attractive great attention due to their unique properties such as long photon lifetime and strong optical field confinement for miniature and integrated devices and systems. In past decades, different geometries and materials have been applied to fabricate optical microcavities and have found great application potential from sensing to lasing.

This special topic session is to provide a platform for researchers working on optical microcavities to discuss the progress, challenges and new possible directions from lasing to sensing.
